Is There a Fifth Wheel with a Loft?

DO YOU NEED an RV with above-average storage? Or maybe you need private sleeping spaces for everyone in your family? Whatever your reason, a fifth wheel with a loft offers versatility and space, making comfortable camping easy. Let’s see if this is the ideal RV type and floor plan for you—enjoy our picks for the best 5th wheels with lofts!

Key Takeaways

  • Fifth wheels with lofts provide flexible sleeping space, extra storage, and privacy for families, with a wide range of floor plans including mid-bunk lofts, rear-bedroom lofts, and unique configurations like enclosed lofts or lofts above flex rooms.
  • Featured models offer distinct perks—from outdoor kitchens, functional desks, spacious living areas, and teen-friendly layouts to high cargo capacities and innovative designs, such as patio decks, foyers, or lofts integrated inside bunk rooms.

Choosing the right fifth wheel depends on how you travel, who you travel with, and the amount of space you need. Proper maintenance significantly influences its lifespan, which typically ranges from 10 to 15 years.

10 Intriguing Fifth Wheels with Lofts

We’ve chosen our favorites for the best 5th wheel with lofted sleeping and/or storage spaces. Some are in the rear, while others are in the middle. Each RV offers unique features and designs, so let’s dive into our list of fifth wheels with a loft!

Forest River Campsite Elite 36RF

Specs

  • Length: 42’9”
  • Dry Weight: 12,588 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,800 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 10

The Campsite Elite 36RF features a mid-bunk room floor plan with a spacious rear living area and a front main bedroom. Like most 5th wheels with this layout, the interior features a sofa, theater seating, a kitchen island, an entertainment center with an electric fireplace, and a freestanding dinette. I love the hidden pantry behind the entertainment center, especially for a family that needs that additional storage.

The bunk room features a fold-out sofa, a flip-up bunk, storage cubbies, and a few hanging hooks. There are no drawers or a wardrobe to hang clothes in, as the space is designed with shelves and storage cubes. I do love that the small desk is actually functional, with space to put a chair and ample legroom underneath. For additional sleeping space or more storage, the loft is above.

The front bedroom has a camp king bed, a dresser, and a front cap wardrobe with washer and dryer hookups. Aside from 11 and 15-foot awnings and a compartment with a mini fridge, perhaps the most unique exterior feature is a TV set on a sliding mount in the storage compartment, an ideal addition for tailgating.

Keystone Cougar 364BHL

Specs

  • Length: 39’
  • Dry Weight: 11,718 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,282 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 10

Featuring an entirely different floor plan than the Campsite Elite, the Cougar 39BHL is a smaller fifth wheel with a loft, measuring 39 feet even. However, it still has plenty to offer.

This floor plan features a rear bunk room with a queen bed, a loft, and a corner half bath. This allowed Keystone to design an outdoor kitchen, a great feature that takes grilling outside and helps to keep your RV cool during the summer months.

The living area features a tri-fold sofa and booth dinette in a slide-out, an entertainment center with a fireplace, a kitchen island with ample counterspace, a 16-cubic-foot refrigerator, and a huge pantry closet.

Finally, the front bedroom features a queen bed, a slide-out with a wardrobe and a linen closet, and a second doorway leading into the bathroom. The dual entries in the bathroom provide easy access from either the main bedroom or the hallway, but they do remove a wall that could be utilized as a closet with washer-dryer hookups.

Specs

  • Length: 43’
  • Dry Weight: 13,613 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,757 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 7

If you follow the YouTube influencers and podcasters Jason and Abigail Epperson of RV Miles, you’ve likely heard of their new 5th wheel, the Sabre 37RVMILES. If you have older teens, this floor plan may be the ideal alternative to tiny bunk bed camping. The rear bedroom has a tri-fold sofa, nice storage options, and an L-shaped loft. And your teens will love the 70” projector screen rather than a TV.

The living space features a huge L-shaped sectional, an entertainment center with an electric fireplace, a U-shaped kitchen counter, a freestanding dinette, and residential appliances. But the highlight of the RV Miles fifth wheel is the side patio deck that extends from the living area.

With a 12-foot awning overhead, you can enjoy drinks on the patio, no matter the weather. For a growing family who needs a comfortable space for everyone to gather together as well as their own private areas, this 5th wheel with a loft checks most of the boxes!

Keystone Cougar 1776 Edition 360MBI

Subscribe to the Camping World YouTube channel, and never miss a video.

Specs

  • Length: 39’3”
  • Dry Weight: 12,325 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,675 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 10

Another model that features a mid-bunk room floor plan is the Cougar 1776 Edition 360MBI. It features a typical living room with a tri-fold sofa, theater seating, an entertainment center equipped with an electric fireplace, a kitchen island, a booth dinette, and residential appliances. You do have the option to switch out the booths for a freestanding dinette, if that works better for your family.

The bunk room has a tri-fold sleeper sofa, but lacks a flip-up bunk. It also features a desk area, but it lacks sufficient legroom or space for a chair that would truly make it functional for remote work. However, I love the storage in this room! It has drawers and shelves, and they’re all enclosed, so you don’t worry about securing cubes on travel days. The loft is above for an additional sleeping area or more storage space.

The front bedroom is similar to most other fifth wheels with mid-bunk room loft floor plans. It boasts a queen bed, a dresser, and a front-cap wardrobe with washer and dryer hookups. Outside, there’s an outdoor kitchen prep area under a 16’ awning, allowing you to cook bacon or burgers in comfort—rain or shine.

Jayco Eagle 355MBQS

Images by Jayco

Specs

  • Length: 42’1”
  • Dry Weight: 13,115 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,285 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8

The mid-bunk room floor plan in the Eagle 355MBQS features an added hutch in the kitchen for more storage and meal prep space. If you prefer to have the bunk room door along the hallway rather than in the kitchen, this 5th wheel with a loft meets the mark.

The rear living area features a sofa, theater seating, an entertainment center with an electric fireplace, residential appliances, and a kitchen island, typical of most other 5th wheels with a mid-bunk room. But the 355MBQS features a roll-top dinette rather than the standard options of a booth or freestanding table and chairs. This is a great perk for couples or families who need dining space for four, but want to optimize floor space otherwise.

I think this fifth wheel is an excellent option for couples who work while camping. Not only because of the roll-top dinette and added storage of the hutch, but also because the desk is fully functional in the bunk room. There is limited storage, which isn’t particularly ideal for families, but it’s perfect for a remote worker who wants a private office.

Forest River Arctic Wolf 331BH

Specs

  • Length: 38’3”
  • Dry Weight: 9,914 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,931 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 7

The Arctic Wolf 331BH is another floor plan with a rear bedroom and a loft. This room features a 54” x 74” bed and a 60” x 80” loft, providing ample space for two children to sleep in each. Because of the outdoor kitchen, there is minimal space in the bedroom, but if cooking outside is important to you, it’s a space you’ll likely be willing to give up. There is a half bath, which is nice for kids to have a private space to store toothbrushes and toiletries.

The central living area has an entertainment center with an electric fireplace, theater seating, a booth dinette, a kitchen island, two pantry closets, and a hutch. You’ll love the storage space in this area, but it offers minimal seating for families.

The front bedroom is smaller than most of the other 5th wheels on this list because it lacks slides. However, it still features a queen bed, overhead storage, and a wardrobe closet. Outside, you’ll find the outdoor kitchen in the rear, but no awning covering this part of the campsite. The two awnings stretch over 22 feet but start in the center of the camper.

Keystone Montana High Country 381TB

Subscribe to the Camping World YouTube channel, and never miss a video.

Specs

  • Length: 42’5”
  • Dry Weight: 14,451 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,254 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 10

Like the Arctic Wolf, the Montana High Country 381TB features a loft and a rear bedroom. But since there isn’t an outdoor kitchen, this area is more spacious and has a full bathroom. There’s also a rear entry door, allowing for easy access to clean up after being outside all day. The 381TB offers excellent privacy for those who want to sleep upstairs in the loft or downstairs in the bedroom.

The opposing slides provide a spacious central living area. There’s a kitchen island, a hutch, theater seating, a freestanding dinette, an entertainment center with an electric fireplace, and a residential fridge with an ice maker. You have everything you need for a comfortable weekend trip or full-time RV living. However, there is limited seating space for families of four or more.

The main bedroom features a king bed, a dresser, and a wardrobe along the entire front wall, which includes connections for a washer and dryer. Parents will also have their own privacy and plenty of room in the 381TB.

Prime Time Crusader 38BONUS

Images by Prime Time

Specs

  • Length: 43’4”
  • Dry Weight: 13,568 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 3,027 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 7

If you’re looking for a fifth wheel with a loft that offers plenty of cargo space, the Crusader 38BONUS may be the perfect fit. With over 3,000 pounds of cargo capacity, you can bring practically anything you want.

I also love that, while this is another mid-room camper, the living space is drastically different from the others on this list. You have a spacious L-shaped sectional sleeper sofa, an entertainment center with an electric fireplace along the mid-room wall, a nice U-shaped rear kitchen, a freestanding dinette, and a designated desk. You don’t have to use the mid-room as an office and playroom because you have a desk in the main living area!

Another unique feature of the 38BONUS camper is the half bath in the mid-room. No other 5th wheel with a loft on this list has this amenity. While I love this option, it does reduce the storage space in the room. Finally, because the loft is located inside the mid-room rather than on top of it, the kids are completely enclosed in their own space, rather than having an open loft that overlooks the hallway or kitchen area.

Forest River Wildwood Heritage Glen 376FAM

Images by Forest River

Specs

  • Length: 42’7”
  • Dry Weight: 13,489 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,011 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8

The Wildwood Heritage Glen 376FAM offers a solution to the limited family seating space in models with rear bedrooms. While the actual interior area square footage isn’t much different, the huge theater seating reclining sofa provides a place where 4 to 5 people can comfortably sit and watch a movie. Forest River also turned the kitchen island into the dinette. Rather than installing a sink here, it’s a solid surface, and the sink is built into another countertop.

The rear bedroom has a queen bed, two wardrobes, a dresser, and a full bathroom. The loft above has two 38” x 74” bunk mats. The front bedroom features a king bed, a dresser, and a front-cap wardrobe with washer and dryer hookups.

A couple of things to consider with the 376FAM: there is no outdoor kitchen, and the cargo capacity is barely over 2,000 pounds. If you like to cook outside or need to bring a lot of gear, you might want to look at one of the other 5th wheels with loft floor plans.

Forest River Cedar Creek 381MUD

Specs

  • Length: 43’5”
  • Dry Weight: 15,429 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,571 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 10

The Cedar Creek 381MUD is one of the largest fifth wheels on this list, and it’s also one of the most unique floor plans, with the main bedroom in the rear and a flex space in the front. The rear bedroom features a king bed and a dresser, and it is connected to a spacious en-suite that includes a double vanity and a closet prepped with washer and dryer hookups.

The front flex space has a Murphy bed with side storage closets, a jackknife sofa, a half bath, and a small loft. However, this loft is not as high as the others on this list. To access the loft in the 381MUD, you simply climb four small stairs, and it’s open to this front bedroom. For younger kids, this design may be more suitable than lofts that are raised high above a bedroom.

Another unique feature is the foyer area. Have you ever seen a foyer in an RV? The 381MUD features a small space immediately upon entry, complete with coat racks, a bench, and a cabinet. This is a fantastic solution to shoe storage, which is a common problem in many RVs.

However, like many 5th wheels with two bedrooms, the central living area has limited seating with only theater seating for two and a dinette. But with amenities like a kitchen island, residential appliances, and an entertainment center with an electric fireplace, you’ll have all the comforts of home.

Honorable Mentions

What is the Best Length for a 5th Wheel?

The best length for a 5th wheel for you depends entirely on how you travel, who you travel with, and how often you camp.

If you’re looking for a comfortable 5th wheel for two and only going camping a few times a year, a smaller 5th wheel camper (under 39 feet) will probably suffice. If you’re a family of five camping for extended periods, you’ll want more space. If you want to camp primarily in national parks or state parks, you’ll need something closer to the 30-foot mark as opposed to a 42-foot behemoth.

Whenever you consider options, take into account the storage space and sleeping areas, especially if you have more than two people. Do you have enough room for everyone to feel like they have their own space? Is there room to cook for a family? If it rains, is there room inside to hang out together? When you identify your needs and expectations, you can then decide on a fifth wheel length that best suits you.

What Is The Life Expectancy of a Fifth Wheel?

Generally, you can expect a fifth wheel to last between 10 and 15 years. However, the life expectancy of any RV varies based on maintenance and care, the frequency of use, and the manner and location of travel. Owners have a huge influence over the life expectancy of their camper. Proper RV care goes a long way to prevent damage and problems. While you can have bad luck and general wear and tear, the better you care for your RV, the longer it will last.

If you travel full-time, you’ll put more wear and tear on the camper than someone who takes out their RV twice a year. Also, RVs in the south will generally last longer because they’re not taking a beating from snow, ice, and wind. Consider how you’ll use it, where you plan to travel, and whether you can handle the upkeep and general maintenance that an RV requires.
