America’s Northeast region is a beautiful place to camp and travel. It’s full of charming little towns, lush forests, rolling hills, and winding rivers. Vermont showcases the beauty of this region particularly well. And if you want to camp within the 2,000-square-mile region that has been dubbed, “Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom” then Moose River Campground is an excellent place to stay.
This little corner of land earned its name thanks to its incredible beauty and undisturbed tranquility. It’s small and tucked away in the far corner of the country, so many travelers tend to overlook it. But if you want to have a truly serene camping experience, this is a wonderful place to set your sights.
A few different campgrounds and RV parks are located in this area, but Moose River Campground stands out thanks to its stellar reviews. Many visitors come here again and again, making it one of the top-rated parks in the state of Vermont. To find out what makes it so beloved, read on!
Overview
Moose River Campground is located in Saint Johnsbury, Vermont. As the name suggests, it’s perched on the banks of Moose River, which connects to the larger Passumpsic River. This little RV park is located on the outskirts of Saint Johnsbury and its only a short distance away from I-93 as well. So if you’re on a road trip through the Northeast, this campground won’t be too far out of your way.
This park is small but mighty, with a grand total of 49 RV sites. By keeping the park small, this helps maintain the peace and quiet that makes this area so popular. It also helps to preserve the beauty of the surrounding woods without sprawling into a huge parking lot. But this limited number of sites also means that you’ll definitely want to reserve your spot ahead of time. Lots of people love this park, so it’s smart to book early.
Because it’s located in a far North state, this campground is only open on a seasonal basis. You won’t want to stay here when the snow starts piling up anyway! But feel free to stop by anytime between May 1–October 19. If you come during the fall months, you can also enjoy the stunning color-changing foliage that Vermont is famous for.
The rates here are also quite reasonable. Every site come with full hookups for water, sewage, and electricity, as well as connections to the park’s cable TV and Wi-Fi. Some spots come with additional perks, such as BBQ grills, paved patios, and outdoor furniture.
The average nightly rates are listed below, although weekly and monthly discounts are also available.
- 30-Amp Track Sites: $53 per night
- 30/50-Amp Pull-Through Sites: $58 per night
- 30-Amp River Sites: $58 per night
- 20/30/50-Amp Prime Sites: $73 per night
There is an additional $5 charge if you stay here during a holiday, but even at its most expensive, the rates are manageable. You’ll also get a great value thanks to the incredible location and peaceful atmosphere. Riverside rental RVs and cabins are also available if you plan to stay here without a rig of your own.

Amenities

When it comes to amenities, Moose River Campground is fairly simple. It’s not trying to be a fancy resort, but instead leans on the beautiful natural surroundings to create an idyllic camping experience. The whole park is landscaped with rocks, trees, flowers, and shrubs. Many of the RV sites even come with their own mature trees for extra shade and privacy.
Because full hookups are provided at each site, there are no restrooms and shower facilities in the common areas. So you’ll want to be sure that your RV has its own functional bathroom before you stay here.
It’s also worth noting that this park caters specifically to adults. Families with children are not excluded, but there are no child-centric activities or amenities like playgrounds or pools. For some campers, this is a benefit though! Sometimes it can be nice to step away from busy family campgrounds to enjoy a more peaceful retreat.
There are several communal amenities as well. Guests can visit the campground fire pits, the outdoor cookhouse, and the spacious pavilion. All of these provide an excellent space to socialize, cook, or just relax away from your campsite. Pets are also welcome here, but owners are responsible for keeping them on a leash and cleaning up after them.
Additional amenities at Moose River Campground include:
- A well-stocked camp store
- Propane refills
- Accessible laundry facilities
- Garbage and recycling services
- A dog run
- The “Tractor Garden” attraction
- Daily newspaper and firewood deliveries to premium sites
But one of the biggest perks of staying here is the activities schedule! Moose River Campground goes above and beyond to provide fun opportunities to make friends and socialize.
There are different activities every weekend and most of them are completely free to join. (The only exception are the Paint’N’Sip nights, which cost $35 per person). But otherwise, every guest is welcome to participate. Be sure to check the camp calendar for upcoming events like potlucks, free fishing days, ice cream deliveries, and holiday parties.

Reviews

Finally, let’s cover the reviews that Moose River Campground has earned over the years. This park has been in business for a while, so there has been plenty of time for visitors to judge the good and the bad. And as it turns out, it’s almost entirely good news here!
On RV LIFE Campgrounds, this park has scored a cumulative 9.2/10. It’s a bit unusual to find a campground that breaks into the 9 range, so this is already quite impressive. And it only gets better when you see that 94% of guests ranked it as “Good” or “Excellent.”
Guests particularly loved the location and how quiet and peaceful it was. Many of the sites are right on the river, so it’s easy to fall asleep to the sound of the water. Visitors reported that the sites were fairly spacious and the hookups worked well. The only complaint that popped up a few times was about the Wi-Fi speeds. But in such a heavily forested area, that’s to be expected.
People also described the camp hosts as being friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable about the area. So if you’re looking for travel trips from a local, be sure to talk to Mary and Gary.
Many campers reported that they have returned here multiple times, so this park has the potential to be a stand-out favorite for you as well. Keep it on your list if you plan to travel through Vermont’s Kingdom sometime soon!
